Roasted Turkey Panini Recipe

The roasted turkey panini follows an international tradition of fine Italian cuisine, while rebranding a sandwich with delightful ingredients: cheese, cranberry sauce and turkey slices. This is a simple, yet tasty recipe, and a way of reinterpreting the Italian cuisine, while adding it some contemporary, ingenious elements.

Panini, a small bread roll, as the Italian term stands for, seems to have emerged in the culinary history in the 16th century, when it was mentioned in an Italian cookbook. In time, panini has reached a wide variety of forms and recipes, and it’s now sold in trendy restaurants all over the world.

Panini has reached an international status, though its origins are Italian. Italy’s Panini is a roll or leaf of bread, sliced horizontally and filled with different ingredients: ham, cheese, salami or mortadella is the most popular. Another Italian panini is the grilled one, called by the Italians “toast”, which is usually made of two slices of “pane in cassetta”, with prosciutto and processed cheese (normal cheese with extra salt, coloring and whey).

The Italian toast is grilled in a sandwich press, and this is how other countries have imported it. UK or the US use only the grilled or toasted Panini, with various shapes and tastes, but with one common ingredient: the cheese.

Italy is famous for all the diversity in the culinary area, being famous for numerous products: Italian wines, Italian pasta, Italian breads, Italian pizza, antipasti and cheese. With a strong tradition of baking bread, Italy is a reputed name when it comes to the art of dough and all the possibilities included. Ciabatta, mainly and often used in panini sandwiches, has become one of the most popular breads around US and Europe, being widely used as sandwich bread.

Ingredients

IngredientsThe roasted turkey panini is a delicious sandwich with little preparation time or effort. For a successful result, here’s what this recipe involves:
  • one ciabatta, an Italian white bread with an elongated form and rather flattish; one can replace it with a French baguette or any other correspondent which fits
  • 1 tbsp of softened cream cheese
  • 2 tbsp whole cranberry sauce
  • 3 thin slices of red onion
  • 4 ounces roasted turkey, in slices
  • Italian seasoning (including basil, oregano, coriander, rosemary and marjoram)

  • Take the ciabatta or the French baguette and cut them in half lengthwise and cut again in half. The cream cheese needs to be seasoned with some of that Italian seasoning, and then spread nicely on one slice of bread. On the other slice of bread, spread the cranberry sauce. Now begin layering the roasted turkey, the fine slices of onion and then sprinkle it all with a dash of black pepper.

The two slices of bread should now be reunited, with all the ingredients between them, and put into a preheated grill or griddle, and cooked for about 5 minutes. When the bread is golden brown, your roasted turkey panini is ready. You can serve it immediately, right after cutting the panini in half, on the diagonal.

Like many other recipes, this also sustains personal choices and modifications. The turkey meat can be replaced with chicken meat, ham, finely cut sausages, or bacon. The grilled panini can also be rubbed with garlic after grilling it; the taste will be surprisingly amazing, while the Italian seasoning might be replaced with another sauce.
