Greek Honey Cake Recipe

The Greek cuisine is famous not only for its Mediterranean accents which include using olive oil, herbs, vegetables, grains and bread, but also for its desserts too. In Greek desserts and sweets, honey is a popular ingredient. Find out the true spirit of Greece with this special Greek honey cake recipe.

Honey is more than just a comestible ingredient, its flavor and its natural sweetness make it one of the most popular treats, also used in various traditional medicines and in other medicinal purposes. Though, the main use of honey still remains in the kitchen, where it is used in baking, as a beverage, a natural sweetener, and it’s also the main ingredient in mead, also known as honey wine.

Besides the obvious and multiple ways of using honey in the kitchen, it also has lots of nutritional undeniable attributes. Honey is a strong antimicrobial agent, preventing the growth of many bacteria, due to its rather acidic PH level. It also prevents colon diseases, sore throats, coughs, it treats wounds and it reduces the discomfort in burns and their time of healing.

The Greeks used for many generations now the honey, being more than aware of its sweet divine taste, and included it in lots of traditional sweet treats and desserts. Diples is a Greek delicacy containing honey, usually made for Christmas or weddings, Loukoumades (the traditional Greek donuts) also uses honey in its original recipe, and also melomakarona (which stands for honey macaroons) is a honey-based dessert.
The Greek honey recipe needs the following ingredients:


  • 3/4 cup of butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup of sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/4 cup of milk
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp of baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp of salt
  • 1/2 tsp of cinnamon
  • 1 tsp orange rind, grated
  • 1 cup of walnuts, chopped

  • Honey syrup:
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of honey
  • 3/4 cup of water
  • 1tsp of lemon juice

  • The syrup preparation is nice and easy. Mix the sugar, honey and the water in a saucepan, simmer for 5 minutes then add the lemon juice and let it all boil for 2 minutes. When ready, remove from heat and let it coll.

    The cake is made by combining the flour, together with the baking powder, the orange rind and the salt. Blend the dry ingredients and the nuts until reaching a creamed mixture, and then bake the mixture into a baking pan (greased and floured) at 350F degrees, for about 40 minutes. When ready, let it cool, and then cut the cake into squares or any other shape desired and spread the honey syrup over it.
