Cinnamon Toast Recipe

The cinnamon toast is the greatest and sweetest alternative to a classical breakfast – start your day with it and most likely you’ll be delighted! Sometimes, the simplest recipes are the greatest, and they take their delicious taste from only one ingredient, which seems to be a magical one. What can be better than a sugary and spicy treat? This type of toast uses one of the oldest spicy herbs ever, the cinnamon, which has been renowned since antiquity and still hasn’t lost its charm. Used in cooking to flavor various dishes and sweet treats, cinnamon is also used in medicine, where it is believed to have curative properties when dealing with colds, or with problems of the digestive system. Rich in antioxidants and with an amazing antibacterial reputation, cinnamon spices most of our favorite cereals, cakes, pies, donuts, chocolates, fruits and even liqueurs. In the Middle East, cinnamon is also used to spice up chicken or lamb meat dishes, or in the Persian cuisine, where it flavors soups, sweets and drinks.

In the long tradition of toast, many additional and sometimes unusual ingredients were added, depending on the specific cuisine which included toast among its traditions. Commonly eaten with butter or margarine spread over it, toast has become nowadays a fashionable way of having breakfast, with many other variants for serving, including the jam or jelly, just like in the British traditional cuisine. For this specific recipe, spices were added, transforming a simple toast into a delicious sweet treat. Cinnamon can be replaced with other spices, like nutmeg, ginger or coriander, but for now let’s discover the cinnamon toast.

The ingredients serve to cook 2 portions:

  • 4 slices of bread
  • 5 ml (1 tsp) ground cinnamon
  • 30 ml (2 tbsp) caster sugar
  • butter for spreading


  • Mix the cinnamon and sugar together and, meanwhile, toast only on one side the bread. The un-toasted side of the bread should be buttered with generosity and sprinkled with the cinnamon and sugar mixture. Grill until the mixture starts melting. It's time to cut into fingers the bread slices and to serve.
    Another variant of this recipe includes toasting the bread on both sides, using the toaster, the grill or the oven’s broiler. The rest of the recipe is pretty much the same, buttering a side and sprinkling it with the cinnamon sugar. If one decides to use the oven’s broiler to cook the cinnamon toast, the bread should be kept until the sugar melts and starts to bubble – this is the sign that the toast is ready to serve.
