Bean and Cheese Quesadilla

Quesadilla is a famous Mexican snack, made of cheese wrapped in tortilla, hence the name, which comes from Spanish, where it means cheese tortilla. Since Mexican cuisine is a great source of inspiration, many additional recipes were created after the traditional quesadilla recipe, just like the bean and cheese quesadilla is.


Like many other Mexican recipes, quesadilla changed its actual recipe over time, with many other ingredients in addition.
Today, quesadilla ingredients include eggs (raw or scrambled), potatoes, spinach, ham, bacon, shrimp, chicken, maple syrup, beans, avocado, sour cream, mushrooms or guacamoles. Quesadillas are usually made in comals, made from heavy cast iron, resembling griddle pans. Comals can be substituted griddles or other plat pans.

There are various types of quesadilla:

  • the Mexican quesadilla – a folded tortilla filled with cheese
  • the Guatemalan quesadilla – actually a type of bread, having nothing in common with the traditional quesadilla
  • the corn tortilla based cheese tacos – a corn tortilla containing cheese, meat and guacamole
  • the Venezuelan quesadilla – a corn-based bread filled with various ingredients, similar to tortilla
  • the wheat tortilla – a cheese sandwich, often filled with more ingredients, , grilled on an oiled griddle


  • Usually cut into wedges to serve, the Mexican quesadilla is a continuous reinvented Mexican dish. The variety of ingredients used to fill it up is amazing, each ingredient having one or more healthy attributes, like, in this case, beans.

    Beans are a major source of soluble fiber, meaning that it’s great for our cholesterol, they reduces the risk of heart diseases, cancer and they help maintain a healthy digestive tract. Great in filling nutritional requirements, beans can be dried or canned, boiled or fried.

    And since Mexico is such a powerful source of inspiration, why not be inspired by a quick, nice and easy bean and cheese quesadilla?
    Here’s what it takes for one:

  • 2 medium-sized flour tortillas
  • ¼ cup of cheese
  • ¼ cup of fried beans
  • chili sauce, 1 or 2 teaspoons

  • This recipe will only necessitate 5 minutes and its taste is delicious. One just has to warm a comal or another flat pan, over a medium heat, not too hot. Now place a tortilla and layer it with the beans, using a large spatula, so that the beans will spread evenly.

    Sprinkle some chili sauce and then add another layer, this time of cheese, and then add the other tortilla. You can press it a little, so that the top tortilla sticks to the beans, while the cheese is melting. When this happens, it’s time you flip it over to the other side. Each side only necessitated about 4 minutes of cooking, and soon it’s all ready.

    Some people add extra ingredients to this extremely simple recipe, like hot taco sauce, chicken cubes or chopped cilantro. After all, Mexican cuisine is more than famous for its colorful dishes and highly intense aromas spread out due to all the ingredients and spices.
